How (and why) to Choose Natural and Ethical Dog Treats

Let’s be honest: most dogs aren’t that picky. If it smells vaguely edible, it’s probably going straight in their mouth. But just because they’ll eat anything, doesn’t mean they should.

From training rewards to lazy-day chews, treats for your dog are part of daily life. And when you get into the habit of reading the back of the pack, you start to see just how much of a difference wholesome ingredients can make to their overall health and happiness.

Here’s what to look for (and what to avoid) on your next snack shop.

What Should you Look out for When Reading an Ingredients list?

If there’s one thing to check before buying any pet food or treat, it’s the ingredients. Long lists, vague wording, artificial colourings… if it looks more like a chemistry lesson than a shopping list, it’s probably best left on the shelf.

Look for recognisable and natural ingredients. Ideally, the first thing listed should be a single, named protein, like salmon or venison. Not “meat meal” or “animal derivatives”, which can refer to any part of an animal that’s not a premium meat cut, including organs, blood, bone, sinew, or feather dust from a variety of sources. The trouble is, you never really know what your dog’s getting. For dogs with sensitive stomachs or an iffy immune system, it’s a minefield.

Short, simple ingredient lists are more nutritious and easier for dogs to digest. They also make it easier to spot allergens and avoid reactions. Our One Ingredient Range is full of juicy goodies made with just meat, air, and patience. No nonsense. Just the good stuff. And we get creative with our protein sources: just look at our Goosey Lucy’s Goose Chews and Buffalo Chew Sticks!

Choose Treats that are Minimally Processed

Highly processed foods aren’t just a people problem. A lot of commercial dog treats are packed with preservatives, synthetic binders, or grains used as cheap fillers. They might taste good, but they don’t bring much nutrition-wise.

Minimally processed treats, on the other hand, retain more of their original goodness. Look for those that are gently baked or air-dried, not extruded or filled with mystery gloop. These kinds of healthy snacks can promote dental health, steadier energy, glossier coats, and healthy skin, without all the empty calories.

They also tend to be easier on the stomach and more appealing in both smell and texture, even for fussy eaters. And while they may look a little less uniform than the highly processed stuff, what does it matter to your furry friend?

Chewability Matters Too

Not every treat suits every dog. For older pups, smaller breeds, or those with dental issues, it’s worth looking for options that are a little softer or smaller. That way, they can still enjoy a good snack without struggling to get through it.

Chews made from natural materials like dried meat or yak last yonks and provide just the right amount of texture: tough enough to be satisfying, but not so hard they’re risking a chipped tooth. If your dog loves a challenge, try them on a Chewroot or Antler Chew, or if they’re the daintier type, give our yak Puff Nuggets or sweet potato treats a go.

It’s What’s Inside that Counts

That shiny supermarket pouch might be eye-catching, but the real story is in the small print. Fancy marketing doesn’t mean high quality, and a recognisable brand name doesn’t always guarantee transparency.

Instead of shopping on autopilot, get into the habit of checking the label. Where’s the meat from? Is the treat grain free? Are the ingredients clearly listed? If it’s hard to find that information, it’s not a good sign.

We keep things simple. Clear labelling. Proper ingredients. No mystery mixes. So, whether your dog’s training, chewing, or just being their brilliant self, you know exactly what they’re eating and why it’s good for them.

The Ethical Side of Snacking

Where your treats come from matters. Meat that’s ethically sourced, fish that’s responsibly caught, and suppliers that treat their workers and the planet with respect mean better welfare for animals, more traceable supply chains, and less waste overall. More flavour, nutrition, and variety, and less dodgy stuff: it’s a win-win.

And it’s not just about sourcing. Environmentally friendly treats often go hand in hand with lower-impact packaging, minimal processing, and reduced transport emissions too — all small things that add up to a lighter pawprint.

We’ve always believed you shouldn’t have to choose between doing what’s right and doing what works. That’s why we work with trusted producers, source as sustainably as we can, and use eco packaging wherever possible.

Our commitment has earned us Ethical Accreditation from The Good Shopping Guide, and a top rating in their Cat & Dog Food Ethical Table, which we’re chuffed to keep year after year. But we’re not all accolades: we keep things transparent too, which is why anyone can see what we’ve been up to here.

In Short…

Better treats lead to better health, and better choices all round.

By switching to natural, ethical snacks made from real ingredients, you’re doing more than just filling the treat tin. You’re helping your dog feel their best, avoiding empty calories, and taking steps towards a more sustainable world.
